My First Tailgate

this was certainly the earliest I've ever woken up for a ballgame. BJC picked me up just past 9 a.m., and we arrived at AH's parents' place in Fresh Meadows for their annual Opening Day tailgate.

these folks do not fuck around. by the time we arrived, the turkey was already frying (and wow, what a distinctively lovely smell that is), and AH was at the grill cooking shrimp and homemade sausages. all of the two-dozen or so tailgaters who had been observing Passover (which was most of us, it seemed) had decided to break with this meal, and it was well worth it. in addition to the fantastic sausage, shrimp, and fried turkey, there was a delicious grilled snapper. The chefs did themselves proud.

Note AH's jersey-- I'm not the only one who's digging seeing HoJo coaching first base. There was some discussion as to whether Shawn Green, who's currently wearing 20, ought to give the number up to Johnson. It's hard for an '86 Mets fan like me to argue with that, though in general I think that players should get dibs over coaches on number.

the bakers did themselves proud, too. this was an orange velvet cake, with blue cream cheese frosting layers. it was as yummy as it was adorable.

to get to the game from Fresh Meadows, we took the Q30 to Flushing Main Street and the 7 one stop to Shea. couldn't have been easier really... unless one were coming from Great Neck, of course.

many, many thanks to AH and his family and friends for making it such a great Opening Day.
