in which I clarify my feelings on pronunciation

the introduction of the Mets lineup at Shea yesterday took place over the loudspeaker and on DiamondVision-- the announcer said "Batting first and playing shortstop..." and then Jose's face appeared on screen and he said "Jose Reyes, Villa Gonzales, Dominican Republic" to much applause. Then the same for Endy Chavez, making his first start of the season in left field. Next, the announcer intoned "Batting third and playing center field," and then the smiling face on the screen said, in the rolling cadence of his mother tongue, "Cárr-los Bel-trán, Mánatí, Puerto Rico."

my dad poked me. "See!" he said. "That's how his name is pronounced. And you're pissed at Rick Sutcliffe for putting the emphasis on the -trán!"

a couple of innings later, after I'd mulled the thought for a while, I said "yeah, but when Beltran is saying it himself, he's saying it in Spanish. it feels off to hear the flat mid-western accent of a 50 year old white guy trying to say it in Spanish-- as off as when broadcasters on English-language TV in LA call the city "Lós Ángeles." If you're speaking English, say the name as it's said in English. it should only be said in Spanish if it's said in Spanish."
